Very disingenuous for multiple outlets to run with “the West”. Though
this initial AP article does specify that this refers to the Western Hemisphere, the choice to run headlines with “West” kinda implies that there are no other island prisons in “The West” (as in the European Union, the United States, Australia, etc.).
– One of the most infamous incarceration schemes on the planet is Australia’s “Pacific Solution,” a “solution” to refugee migration centered on the imprisonment of asylum seekers on island prisons, including the infamous prisons at Nauru and Manus,
both opened initially in 2001, and re-fortified after 2012. (Nauru is
extremely isolated, in the South Pacific, 3000 kilometers away from the
Australian coast; the Manus detention centre is far away off the
northeast coast of Papua.) Since 2012, over 3,125 people have been sent
to Nauru while over 4,180 people have been sent to Manus. (The “last
refugee held on the Pacific island of Nauru under Australia’s offshore
detention policy” was “evacuated” to mainland Australia only on 24 June
2023, not even a month prior to this headline.)
– Obviously
the EU incarcerates refugees on Mediterranean islands, notoriously at
Moria on Lesbos, whose international reputation as the home of Sappho
has been supplanted by its reputation as a de facto prison for asylum
seekers. In October 2015, over 10,000 people landed on Lesbos in just one day.
In 2017, the island averaged 2,500 arrivals per month. By 2019,
humanitarian investigations showed that over 10,000 people were being
held in a facility with a maximum capacity of 3,000. In 2020, fires left
over 12,000 refugees on the island without shelter. By December 2021,
Doctors Without Borders raised alarm that over 2,200 refugees were
living in “dire” conditions on the island. As of early 2023, Lesbos
(along with Kos, Leros, Chios, and Samos) is hosting over 4,500 people
who are stuck in “reception and identification centers.”
– And in the Western Hemisphere? The US prison at Guantanomo, also on the coast of an island in this same sea.
– An island prison in the Caribbean, a region fundamentally and
intimately connected to centuries of imprisonment, plantations, Indigenous genocide, antiBlackness, racial castes, and
chattel slavery, all achieved and enforced through the bounded, isolated geographic containment structure allowed by islands.
– The federal government says the prison will be built “in harmony with nature.”
– A prison … in harmony with nature.
Still discussing implementation of literal island prisons despite our collective familiarity with carceral archipelagoes.
“the CEO doesnt want to run that kind of website” Excuse, shouldnt have bought the ‘go nuts show nuts whatever’ website if thats the case. APPEAL DENIED
“we have to follow the TOS of the appstores we’re hosted on” Excuse item one, no you dont, item two, you have since those days implimented infrastructure that would allow pornography and sex work on this platform Without violating TOS of any applicable app store. APPEAL DENIED
“we own the site we get to make the rules” Incorrect, this site has only ever made profit when the users willed it. we collectively own the site as a hive mind and no legal change in ownership will change that. APPEAL DENIED
“we have to keep this website safe for the children who use it” Argument based on fallacybanning pornography and sex workers does not prevent pornography and sex work from occuring on the site, it only forces aforementioned users to hide and avoid labling their content appropriately, which REDUCES the safety for children and sex workers alike instead of increasing it, this has been shown to the point that making this argument at all is tantamount to admiting fascist intent APPEAL DENIED
Reblog it. I want this to be on Tumblr radar by end of the week, i want my notes to be useless from the discourse, i want every single person on Tumblr to have seen this post at some point
so SAG-AFTRA finally released some official guidance for fans, viewers, creators/influencers, critics, and more during the strike. here’s what you need to know:
if you see a publication/news source/journalist talking about a piece of struck work, that’s ok. they’re allowed to do that.
2. they’re asking regular viewers and fans to DONATE TO STRIKE FUNDS, SHOW UP TO PICKETS IF YOU CAN, and please do NOT boycott streaming services or movies in theaters.
3. influencers, content creators, cosplayers, and anything in between is still a bit of a grey area, but they’re asking people to use their best judgement. “organically” means UNPAID promo (like an invite to a premiere without being paid, being sent a publicity box, letting the company’s social media post a photo of you in cosplay, etc).
obviously this doesn’t answer every question, and isn’t hard and fast rules for fanworks, but it can at least inform how you personally choose to move forward when posting online and moving publically. i hope this helps!
can we talk about the ups strike can we PLEASE talk about the ups strike
i know since writers and actors are already striking thats gonna take up most of the news space on social media but like. ups has until july 31st to meet the teamster’s demands and if not then theyre going on the biggest strike against a single corporation since the early 1900s. the uaw (auto manufacturers union) contract is up this fall, and i believe the alu (amazon labor union) is as well. there’s a huge possibility that they might strike as well, depending on how long the ups strike lasts.
im seeing a lot of talk about hollywood going down but i want to see more talk about labor rights and working class solidarity across the board… like A Lot of shit is about to go down
we’re about to see a lot more propaganda by more than just hollywood, we’re about to see a lot of bullshit political moves on local, state, and federal levels. dont fall for it. workers have power.
poor things, well we should definitely make this easier on them by never repeatedly mentioning their name and deeds on the “reblog things forever” website
I haven't cut my butt length blond curls in 2 1/2 years, the heat is really starting to get to me though so I want a shorter style, I started to go to my normal stylist but I remembered she would only give me a trim no matter what I asked for. So I find myself walking into your shop instead and tell you I want a nice short summer haircut. What happens to my hair?
I’d start with the clippers as soon as I have you wrapped in the cape, before you have the chance to change your mind. You’ll get exactly what you asked for: a nice, short, summer haircut. A zero all-over. Can’t get any shorter or neater than that…
